International Museums Day to be marked in Ho

Ho, May 16, GNA - This year's International Museums Day will be marked in the Volta Regional capital Ho on Wednesday May 18 with clean-up exercise, lectures and an exhibition.

The general theme for the celebration is: 93Museum and Memory". The two lectures to be presented on May 18 would be on the topics: "Museums and Memory" and 93Care and access to Museum Collections."

A statement signed by Mr Alex K. Okpei, Volta Regional Head of the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, said the celebration, the first in the region, 93will be an opportunity to discover and rediscover our individual and collective memory".

It underscored the importance of Museums as expression of the national natural and cultural heritage.

It said the month long celebrations would feature an open house for selected teachers in Accra, free entry to all Museums and Monument Board facilities countrywide from May 18 to May 22, free film shows on Ghana's culture from May 18 to June 17 this year.

The statement said the International Museums Day was established by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) in 1977 93to encourage public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society. "Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, co-operation and peace among peoples", the release said.
