Interim Councils for colleges of education in VR inaugurated

Ho (V/R), Nov 3, GNA - Interim Governing Councils of the seven Colleges of Education in the Volta Region, were inaugurated on Wednesday in Ho with a call on members to restrict themselves to roles assigned to them.

The colleges are Akatsi, Amedzofe, Peki, Saint Francis and Saint Theresa's at Hohoe, Jasikan and Dambai. Mr Joseph Amenowode, Volta Regional Minister, asked members of the Councils to allow management of the colleges to handle the day-to-day affairs of the educational institutions.

He said the Councils were provisional, pending the passing of the appropriate legislation setting up the colleges.

Mr Amenowode said the policy to upgrade training colleges to tertiary status was part of government effort to improve education. He asked members of the Councils to help execute the government agenda of "ensuring quality teaching and learning in our schools".

Justice Anthony Abada, Supervising High Court Judge of Volta Region, administered the oath of secrecy and office to the members. Mr Tawiah Akyea, Chairman of the Peki Government College of Education, called on government to support the Councils to enable members to deliver their mandate.

Each of the Councils has 13 members, including the Chairman, representatives of the Ghana Education Service, Teachers and Educational Workers Union and the Academic Staff, government and Vice Principals, Finance Officers, College Secretaries are ex-officio members.
