Ho CHRAJ records 21 cases for first quarter of 2008

Ho, May 7, GNA - A total of 35 cases, majority of them bordering on human rights abuses, have been lodged with the Ho Municipal office of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in the first quarter of 2008.

Complaints about child and spousal support topped the list, followed by alleged infringement on freedom of worship and claims of salary arrears.

There were also reports about unlawful arrest, detention and torture, delays in dispensing justice, harassment, discrimination and disagreements arising out of intestate succession, according to Mr Carlos Mensah, Principal Investigator at the Commission. He said eight of the cases had been resolved, adding that although most of the complaints fell in the domain of Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DVVSU) of the Police Service and the Department of Social Welfare, the complainants preferred that CHRAJ handled them. Mr Mensah held that many people were uncomfortable with the involvement of the Police in their domestic affairs, hence their refusal to deal with the DOVVSU, even when advised to do so.
