Ghana to celebrate World day against child labour on June 12

Ghana will join the rest of the world to celebrate this year’s World Day Against Child Labour which falls on June 12.

The World Day Against Child Labour was first launched by the International Labour Organisation in 2002 as part of the global advocacy arrangements to highlight the plight of children in hard labour and to serve as a catalyst for the worldwide movement against the trend.

A statement issued and copied to the Ghana News Agency by Mr. Moses Asaga, the Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, said the country had lined up activities for the celebration on the theme “Human Rights and Social Justice... Let’s End Child Labour”.

It said there is a week long programme to mark the celebration begining in Accra on Tuesday, June 5, 2012.

The statement called for efforts by all countries, organizations and individuals to consider the menace of child labour, especially across the developing world, as an unacceptable anti-social phenomenon which must be eliminated.

The activities to mark the day include a media launch on Tuesday, Children’s Panel Discussion on Thursday, National Forum on Ghana’s Achievements and Challenges and Prospects on Child Labour interventions since year 2000.

Other activities are an exhibition to showcase some of the terrible activities children are compelled to undergo and the extreme human deprivations as well as a “What do you know” contest for Senior High Schools.**
