GMA is still relevant in the society - Alhaji Zagoon-Sayyed

Alhaji Zagoon-Sayeed Haruna, a Senior Researcher at the Ghana Muslim Academy (GMA) has said the Academy is still relevant in the promotion of education and educating Muslims in Ghana.

He said it was rather unfortunate that Muslims were still not encouraging their wards to study harder and thereby establish better foundations for themselves.

Alhaji Zagoon-Sayeed was speaking on the topic ‘The Challenges of Educating Ghanaian Muslim’s at the 2nd week of the Annual M. A. Mujahid Ramadan lectures under the Theme: The Spirit of Ramadan in Promoting Peace and Stability in Ghana organized" the Ghana Muslim Academy.

He said the prevailing status of Muslim education in Ghana shows that more effort was needed in order to secure tertiary education for majority of Muslim students.

Alhaji Zagoon-Sayeed said some Muslims needed role models to guide them on how to prioritize their social expenditures adding that "the indiscriminate un-Islamic polygamous marriages ought to freeze."

He said progressive communities and nations throughout the World placed much priority and emphasis on the training and education of its youth when setting developmental agenda.

Alhaji Zagoon-Sayeed said education was recognized as the most important tool and a crucial catalyst for national development and that the right to education was captured in many national and international jurisdictions.

Mr. Halidu Mohammed Yakubu, Chairman of the occasion, said Muslims were not sacrificing for their children's education and that it was still a challenge for a Muslim youth to get formal education.

He said women were doing better in the promotion of education in the Muslim communities and congratulated the Muslim for their commitment and support towards educating their children.

He appealed to Muslim Organizations to assist in providing scholarship for needy but brilliant Muslim students.**
