Five-year-old boy loses hand in freak accident

Yaamansah (B/A), July 21, GNA - Tragedy hit a family at Yaamansah in Jaman South district of Brong Ahafo on Wednesday when their five year old basic school one pupil had his right hand severed at the wrist by the flying lid of a barrel.

Bright Yeboah of Yaamansa District Assembly Primary School was returning home from school after closing when the incident occurred. He told Ghana News Agency that he saw the object flying over some houses so decided to squat to avoid being hit but unfortunately it came straight to his right wrist.

The boy's uncle said a palm wine taper and distiller, Mr Ameyaw Ekumfi, in a bid to get rid of traces of engine oil from a new barrel he had procured set it on fire and the lid popped out. The victim's parents appealed to philanthropists, NGO's, NADMO, the district assembly and individuals to help them to acquire an artificial hand for the boy.
