Fifteen killed in 67 road accidents at Asante-Mampong

Mampong (Ash), Nov. 26, GNA - Fifteen people were killed in 67 road accidents that occurred in the Asante-Mampong Municipality within the first nine months of the year. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Benjamin Kwadwo Gyasi, Municipal Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU), said 41 others suffered serious injuries.

During the same period in year 2009, the area recorded 70 accidents, which claimed nine lives and left 30 people injured. DSP Gyasi, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), identified speeding, reckless overtaking and overloading as the major factors that led to those car crashes. He said some of the motor accidents could have been avoided if the drivers had been more careful, disciplined and showed respect for road traffic rules and regulations. He said to help make the roads safer for travelers, the MTTU personnel had stepped up road checks in the municipality and appealed for support, understanding and cooperation of all road users. DSP Gyasi warned that drivers, who offended road traffic laws, would be brought to justice. He suggested that Highway Code and all relevant road traffic laws were translated into the local languages for the benefit of drivers who could read and understand the English language.
