Female students sweep away highest prize science awards

Five female students of the Dormaa Senior High School swept away the highest number of prizes in the School’s Second Best Science Students’ Awards Ceremony held on Friday.

The awards ceremony, which was instituted last year and held annually is an initiative of two old students of the School, christened, “Dr. Steve Lianoglou Award for Best Science Student”, saw nine students of the School comprising, five girls and four boys, who performed creditably specifically in the Science discipline receive awards for their exceptional performance during the 2014 -2015 academic year.

The awardees are Adomah Jennifer, Ansu Kwasi Richard, Ferkaa Rachel, Adansi Abigail, Okrah Sara, Oppong Boakye Ebenezer, Kyere Simon, Animah Pokuaa Alice, and Anim Pokuaa Alice.

The various awards categories were Best Female Science Student, Best Science Student for Form One and Two, Overall Best Student in Form One.

Mr Anim Boakye Emmanuel and Ms. Animah Pokuaa Alice, were adjudged the Best Science Student and Overall Best Student for the West African Senior Secondary School (WASSCE 2015) and Best Female Science Student for the West African Senior Secondary School in 2015 respectively.

In his address, Mr. Gordon Asubonteng, the Dormaa Municipal Chief Executive, decried the abysmal performance of Schools in the Municipality in this year’s West African Senior Secondary School (WASSCE), reiterating the need for all stakeholders including teachers, students, and parents to step up efforts to improve the performance.

He congratulated the recipients of the award and urged parents to ensure that their wards stuck to their books.

Mr Isaac Nsiah Edwards, the Municipal Director of Education, noted that Science and Mathematics education were major disciplines needed for development of every society and they were the wheels upon which the progress of every society revolved.

He said there was the urgent need for the government to support science education to solve the various challenges confronting society today.

The Municipal Director of Education cautioned the students against bad examination malpractices, noting, they were inimical to their academic success and development and a major threat to their future lives.

Mrs Margarete Otchere Pomaa, the Headmistress of the School, emphasized the need for parents and guardians to support their ward’s education to guarantee them profitable returns on their investment.

He said the School would soon launch its 70th anniversary celebrations and homecoming events to be organized by the Old Students Association of the School.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Dr. Owusu Taah Eric, one of the two old students who initiated the awards ceremony said “the ceremony had been instituted to motivate students to work hard and promised to extend the awards to cover other disciplines if they get the necessary support”.

The awardees received a book, citation and cash prize of GH? 80.00 and GH? 100.00
