Farmers in Bongo District receive goats

Bongo (U/E), Sept. 3, GNA – The Bongo Anafobiisi Community Development Association (BANACOMDA) in the Bongo District has presented 125 goats to its members as part of its livestock project to promote their economic activities.

Speaking to the GNA at the presentation ceremony, the Chief of Anafobiisi, Naba Anyanebah Akolgo Saabo II, said the economic importance of livestock such as goats and sheep could not be under estimated hence the move by BANACOMDA to help reduce poverty in the area.

He said the association which was inaugurated in February, studied the poverty level of the people and realized that the only way their lives could improve quickly would be through the rearing of goats.

The Project is receiving support from Dr Nana David Mensah, a philanthropist and owner of a Carpentry business at Bole in the Northern Region.

He visited the area in July 2010 and presented GH¢16,850 to BANACOMDA for the commencement of the project.

Naba Anyanebah said the project was targeting 200 beneficiaries covering all the ten sections under Anafobiisi, which include: Ayesikabisi, Saabo, Bongo Kukua, Akansiriga, Adaatobisigo, Leiligo, Dalga, Zuen, Zobokin, and Wegurogo.

He said the project would operate on a revolving basis where each beneficiary would be expected to return a goat each to the association for others to benefit.

Naba Anyanebah said BANACOMDA would take care of the treatment of the animals and the Ministry of Agriculture was expected to begin the vaccination of the goats soon.

He appealed to the Bongo Traditional Council, the district assembly, heads of departments and NGOs to help link the association to benevolent organizations to support widows, orphans and other women’s groups.

The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Aleemyarum commended his sub-chief for his initiative and challenged the beneficiaries to take good care of the animals.
