Ethnocentric comments ‘tearing’ Ghana - Minister

Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agykum, a Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development on Tuesday observed that ethnocentric comments from political fanatics were gradually ‘tearing’ the country apart.

He said such comments were responsible for the polarisation of the country along ethnic and political lines and called on chiefs to bring such people to order.

Mr Agyekum said this when he paid a courtesy call on Nana Obrempong Kanya II, Chief of Krachi-Chinderi to invite him to participate in the fourth National Sanitation Day celebration scheduled for Ho on Saturday.

He said Ghana’s strength lied in cultural diversity and urged chiefs to rise up for the unity of the country.

Mr Agyekum said current “happenings” posed stability challenges to younger generations and ought to be addressed without delay.

“We don’t want ethnic cleansing in Ghana so those comments must stop now. We are one. No one is superior,” he stated.

Nana Kanya said politics ought to bring development to the people and not division.

He commended government for initiating the National Sanitation Day and pledged the readiness of the traditional area to support the event.

Madam Helen Ntoso, the Volta Regional Minister, said the campaign to promote cleanliness would be sustained to keep the country clean.
