Essaman Youth told to protect the sea defence wall

Essaman (W/R), April 25, GNA- Mr. Philip Kwesi Nkrumah, Shama Ahanta East Metropolitan Chief Executive on Saturday called on the youth of Essaman, to defend the newly constructed sea defence wall from economic saboteurs in the area.

He said the winning of sand, stones and pebbles from the seashore for building, moulding of blocks and other purposes, could lead to the destruction of many houses and the main road that runs through the town. Mr. Nkrumah made the call at the inauguration of the Essaman Ultimate Students Club on the theme "Education, a pre-requisite to national development".

He said, the reconstruction of the sea defence wall cost the country nine billion cedis and it would be disastrous if the youth would allow dishonest and self-seeking individuals to destroy it. The township, which is below the sea level, could easily be washed away if nothing was done to protect the wall, the Metropolitan Chief Executive said.

He charged the youth to live morally upright lives, avoid peddling drugs, adding, "You should be disciplined and take your education more seriously".

"Remember that skills acquisition can make you contribute meaningfully towards the development of the country" he stressed. Mr. Nkrumah noted with concern the fallen standards of education in the metropolis and urged members of the club to organise free classes for pupils and students who could not perform well in examination. He charged them to be disciplined and serve as role models in their community.

Mr. Enoch De-graft Essaw, vice president of the club said it was formed in 2001 to mobilise students within Essaman, a fishing community near Sekondi, to undertake voluntary services including organising free classes for members and also to embark on education tours. He said presently the club's membership has increased to 100 from the original membership of seven.

Mr. Essaw said they would sensitise their community on some government policies and educate the youth on the effects of the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Nana Awusie II, chief of Essaman, who is also the life patron of the club said the vision of the youth was laudable and urged them to lead exemplary lives to enhance the growth of the club.

He said the chiefs and elders of town would continue to support the activities of the club to ensure that it achieves its set objectives.
