Educationist urges students to utilise the internet

Dr Sazrar Opata, Chairman of the Board of Directors of University College of Management Studies (UCOMS), has appealed to students to utilise the internet in a productive and creative manner to develop their future careers.

He said currently, the youth had access to technologies such as smart phones, blackberry, smart pads and GPS, which made it easier for them to search for innovative ideas to develop their creative skills.

Dr Opata made the appeal at the Fifth Matriculation of UCOMS in Accra at the weekend.

He said this would help boost their technological skills to compete for jobs on both local and international markets and also enable them to make right choices for themselves and their families.

A total of 285 fresh students were admitted to pursue degree courses in Accounting, Banking and Finance, Human Resources Management, Marketing and Procurement and Supply Chain Management.

They swore the matriculation oath to seek the truth, study diligently and to observe regulations of the University.

Dr Opata noted that, as one of the best private universities in the country, UCOMS had put in place pragmatic measures to give each individual the education and exposure to a world view, regardless of the person’s social background.

He said UCOMS' educational curriculum had been designed to give each student a depth of study in their chosen field and would be prepared for the job market after completion.

Dr Opata assured the students of the authority’s commitment to providing the best teaching practices to enable them to become entrepreneurs and self made business executives in future.

“If you begin the programmes offered by UCOMS with the right attitude, we will give you tools to reason, to make judgments, to ask the right questions and become a critical thinker,” he added.

He advised them to take courses in French, business ethics, logic or critical thinking to help them distinguish between propaganda and opinion and facts from fiction.

Dr Henry Fram Akpalu, Rector of UCOMS, commended the University of Education, Winneba and the Kwame University of Science and Technology (KNUST) for their supportive roles as affiliates in the development of the institution.

He urged the students to play their roles well in their chosen professions by exhibiting a high sense of commitment and discipline.

“You are investing your time and money in pursuit of a higher education and we would like you to reap the benefits through the successful completion of your programme,” he said.**
