East Gonja performing creditably in revenue generation-DCE

Salaga (N/R), July 5, GNA - Mr. Alhassan Mumuni, District Chief Executive (DCE) for East Gonja has expressed satisfaction at the district's creditable performance of revenue mobilisation during the first and second quarters of 2009, which yielded Gh¢28,171.50 out of a projected Gh¢57,990 for the year. He however, regretted that some of the revenue collectors keep money collected for about a month before paying into the Assembly's account saying, "This has become an avenue for embezzlements and loss of revenue to the Assembly".

Mr. Mumuni said this during the first Ordinary Meeting of the Assembly at Salaga. The meeting was to take stock of measures to develop the district and to see how best, in collaboration with stakeholders, the district's development agenda could be carried forward to address poverty, unemployment and hunger.

He therefore called for more stringent measures to be put in place to make the district more independent and self reliant on revenue, which he noted would improve accelerated development in the area. The said he intended to make revenue mobilization one of his major priorities to make resources available to carry out developmental agenda saying, "There is no way we can achieve what we have set our development target without adequate resource mobilisation". Mr. Mumuni said the cassava processing factory in Salaga that had been closed down some two years ago would soon start operation to process cassava into flour, starch and cake for local consumption and export.

He appealed to farmers in the district to avail themselves of the subsidized fertilizers, approved seeds and window for the procurement of farm machinery such as tractors that had been provided by the government to improve farming in the area. He appealed to Assembly Members, Chiefs, Civil Society Organizations, Development Partners and government officials to offer an active support and cooperation to the district's development to overcome the myriad of development challenges in the area. 05 July 09
