Due Diligence Could Weed Out Bad Nuts In Police Service – B/A Police PRO

The Brong Ahafo Regional Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ghana Police Service, A.S.P Christopher Tawiah has noted that as a human institution, the service could not be devoid of deviants

He said every human institution had some amount of deviants, which is a natural phenomenon, but due diligence in the recruitment of persons into the service, could bring the situation under effective control.

Mr Tawiah was speaking on Suncity Radio in Sunyani, in connection with the arrest of six persons involved in the recent robbery attack on traders at Kwame Danso, near Atebubu, which led to the death of Police Constable Frank Adu Klu.

Ironically, the six suspects included two Police officers, Lance Corporal Asiedu Mensah and Corporal Solomon Abu of Goaso and Atebubu Divisions respectively.

He disclosed that the arrest of the prime suspect led to the arrest of the other five involved in the attack, which included the two Police officers.

According to ASP Tawiah, the prime suspect told Police investigators that one of the arrested officers sold the ammunition to him, while the other one took part in the physical attack.

The PRO recalled that in times past, the issue of "Protocol" was not prominent in recruiting persons into the Ghana Police Service, so strict and due diligence was the order of the day, so the level of discipline was quite high. He recounted that in those days, officers went to the home towns of prospective applicants to carry out thorough investigations into the latter's family, and other social backgrounds before being listed into the service.

He was of the view that if the Police authorities took pains to check the background of applicants in this era, such unfortunate incidents that tannish the image of the Ghana Police Service could be reduced to the barest minimum.

Mr Tawiah gave the assurance that the Police Administration would allow the law to take its course on the suspects to serve as a deterrent to others, and also appealed to the public to assist the Police with information to arrest and bring the perpetrators to book, in order to ensure safe and secure atmosphere in the Atebubu area and the Brong Ahafo region as a whole.
