Drop SHS duration debate in favour of quality education - USAG

Kumasi, June 20, GNA - The University Students Association of Ghana (USAG), on Saturday said the real challenge facing the Senior High School (SHS) is quality education and not about the duration of the school. "The problems confronting the SHS are not about having three or four-year duration, but rather the challenges bothering on quality education". A press released signed by Mr Maxwell Ofosu Boakye, President of USAG, therefore, appealed to government to focus on the challenges militating against quality education delivery by providing infrastructural facilities, text books, computers and incentive packages to teachers to enhance education.

"The problems and challenges confronting education are glaring and that the government must not waste the nation's limited resources on discussing the duration of the SHS programme," it added. It cautioned government against its intended aim to push full cost of electricity and water consumption on tertiary students next academic year, saying university students are already over-burdened. "We hope the government is not showing a sign of insensitivity since such an action will put a lot of pressure and hardship on students," the statement said.

It said government must take a second look at the full cost recovery otherwise they would hit the streets to demonstrate their displeasure. The statement also appealed to government to reduce fuel prices because the ordinary Ghanaian was finding it so difficult to cope with the economic challenges.
