Dormaa girls smoke marijuana to avoid pregnancy

Indian hemp smoking by adolescent girls in the Dormaa Municipality is on the ascendency, Mrs Monica Takyiwaa, Assembly Member for Besease electoral area has said.

She said the girls said when they smoked the stuff, they never got pregnant when they had unprotected sex.

Mrs Takyiwaa said this at a public forum on unsafe abortion and sexual reproductive health organized by Global Media Foundation (GLOMEF), a human right and media advocacy non-governmental organisation at Amasu in the Municipality.

She said some of the girls who could not smoke the stuff mixed it with the local gin, “akpeteshie.”

Mrs Takyiwaa said “wee” smoking and peddling had assumed an alarming proportion among young boys and girls in the Dormaa Central Municipality, and called for a radical approach to stop it.

She said teenage pregnancy was very high in the area, and attributed part of the cause to the lack of sex education.

Madam Linda Acheampong, a community health nurse in the Municipality expressed shock and said Indian hemp smoking by girls was unacceptable and appealed to those involved to stop.
