Dormaa Ahenkro formed Peace Council for election 2008

Dormaa-Ahenkro (BA), Sept. 16, GNA - A 27-Member Peace Council was on Tuesday formed at Dormaa Ahenkro to ensure peace before, during and after the 2008 elections in the Dormaa-West Constituency of the Brong Ahafo Region.

The Dormaa Ahenkro Local Council of Churches mooted the idea to contribute towards preaching peace in the constituency.

Membership of the Council was drawn from traditional authorities, the media, security agencies, religious bodies, the Dormaa Municipal Assembly, the Electoral Commission, political parties and the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).

The Council's terms of reference included the creation of a common platform where all political parties in the constituency could reach out to their followers with messages of peace.

It would also embark on church-to-church education campaign and serve as the first point of reconciliation among political parties in the constituency.

The Deputy Chairman of the Local Council of Churches, Reverend Edward Kwasi Foh, explained that the Council's work would complement the peace efforts of other institutionally mandated peace agencies in the Municipality.

He said it should, therefore, not be seen as a counter-group with any ulterior motive. Rev. Foh, who is also the Dormaa Presbyterian Pastor, said no development or human activity could take place amidst chaos and anarchy, hence the need for every Ghanaian to preach peace. He announced that the local council of churches had as part of its strategy planned to embark on series of non-denominational church services in the constituency between now and January 2009.
