DVLA in Tamale sells driving license for GH¢200 - ACP Awuni

Tamale, Nov 3, GNA - The Northern Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Peter Angwubutoge Awuni, has blamed the numerous road accidents in the region on the Driver Vehicle and License Authority (DVLA) and alleged they charge GH¢200 and issue licenses to unqualified persons. "There are a lot of seemingly non road worthy vehicles plying the roads in this region yet they are adequately covered by documents from the appropriate agencies resulting in loss of lives", he told the GNA in an interview.

He said some commercial drivers in the region had confessed to securing licenses although they know nothing about road signs and asked, "Who issued them these driving licenses?"

Mr Awuni said in a recent accident on the Bole/Bamboi road that resulted in the death of 14 people, the driver confessed to the police of buying the license at a fee of GH¢200 from the DVLA in Tamale.

He said he had directed the police to investigate the matter while the driver is to be prosecuted for manslaughter

The Police Commander said road accidents were avoidable if all road users used the roads wisely.

He pledged the commitment of the police to work in tandem with the National Road Safety Commission and the Driver Vehicle and License Author= ity to reduce accidents in the region.
