Cocoa purchasing clerk on bail for breach of trust

Cape Coast, Jan. 20, GNA - Kwasi Anokye, 33 year-old former purchasing clerk of a licensed cocoa buying company was on Tuesday granted 60 million cedis bail with a surety to be justified, when he was arraigned at Cape Coast for breach of trust involving an amount of 41.625 million belonging to his formers employers.
Anokye pleaded guilty but the court, presided over by Mr Mustapha Logoh, changed it to not guilty, to enable the case "be judged on merit".
The accused is to reappear on Tuesday February 10. Prosecuting, Inspector Hope Azasoo told the court that the complainant in the case, Mr Albert Atabila, is a district officer for 'Olam Ghana Ltd', a cocoa purchasing company, while Anokye was a purchasing clerk for the company.
He said between 2000 and 2001, Anokye received monies in totalling 41.625 million cedis from Mr Atabila to buy 72 bags of cocoa beans for the company.
He said Anokye purchased only 25 bags and that all efforts by Mr Atabila to either get the balance of the money or the rest of the bags of cocoa beans, proved futile.
He therefore, lodged a report to the police and Anokye was arrested.
Anokye admitted the offence during interrogation, but claimed he incurred a debt in the process of purchasing the beans.
