Chief appeals to nurses to resume work

Hohoe, June 14, GNA- Togbega Gabusu VI, Paramount Chief of Gbi Traditional Area on Wednesday appealed to the striking health workers to resume work based on humanitarian grounds. He urged them to return to the negotiating table to avoid any human calamities resulting from their actions, bearing in mind their professional oaths. Togbega Gabusu also the President of the Gbi Traditional Council was speaking to the Ghana News Agency at Hohoe during a visit by members of the Traditional Council to the Hohoe District Hospital to assess the effect of the strike action by the nurses and other health workers nationwide.

"We did not want health hazards associated with strikes to befall us here", he said.

Togbega Gabusu furthermore urged government to invite the aggrieved health workers to negotiate a deal or reach out to a compromise. He appealed to government to avoid waiting for strike actions before acting on grievances of workers in any sector.

Dr Edwin Danoo, Medical Superintendent of the hospital said no new admissions were made besides the 25 patients already admitted in the 178-capacity bed Hohoe District hospital. He said attendance has dropped considerably with a skeletal staff attending to those on admission.

Miss Eunice Darkoa Lartey of the Midwifery section said five women delivered their babies between 1300 hours and 2000 hours on Monday and Tuesday.

Mrs Felicia Agbo, Deputy Director of Nursing Services at the Hospital said there was no junior doctors but hoped that the skeletal staff would hold the fort till normalcy returned.
