Chereponi District to terminate contracts because of shoddy work

Chereponi (NR), Oct. 18, GNA - The Chereponi District Assembly has expressed dissatisfaction in contract works executed in the district and was seeking expert advice for the termination of some of the contracts. Alhaji Issah Seidu Abah, District Chief Executive (DCE), who expressed the concern on Thursday during the second ordinary sitting of the assembly said, "Quality of work done on most of the contracts leaves much to be desired.

"In some cases, the entire roof is poorly done, doors and windows are of inferior quality and finishing is very shoddy. There is the need to terminate some of the contracts based on expert advice and blacklist such contractors from the procurement process in the district," he said. He said a chunk of the projects were given on contract last year, which included the construction of the DCE's bungalow and that of the District Coordinating Director, District Planning Officer, Finance Officer and the engineers, but the work on them were poorly done. Alhaji Abah tasked the works and engineering sub-committee of the assembly to intensify their monitoring on assembly projects to ensure that in future contracts were properly executed. Some of the assembly members called for an immediate termination of the contracts and called for the arrest and prosecution of contractors who did shoddy works, to serve as a deterrent to others. The DCE visited some of the completed projects, where it was observed that of the doors and windows had already been broken although no one had occupied them yet.

The DCE's bungalow, for instance had some of its veranda walls cracking and its doors and windows broken down. The DCE also inspected some ongoing projects, where he warned the contractors that any one who did execute his work well was not going to receive money from the assembly, saying, "If you execute good work you will become a friend of the assembly and we will always work with you." He inspected the Chereponi Senior High School Administration Block, which was almost complete, inspected the surface graveling of a 14 -kilometre Chereponi-Kpani road, and the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) project for offices of the Ghana Education Service (GES) workers, where the DCE expressed satisfaction on the work done so far. 18 Oct. 09
