Awards presented at Independence parade

Asamankese, March 8, GNA - Forty-six teaching and non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service were honoured by the West Akim District Directorate of Education for their excellent performance at the golden jubilee parade at Asamankese.

The awards were for 2004 to 2006 and the first prize winners were presented with four-burner gas cookers with accessories, television sets were presented to the second prize winners while ghetto blaster radio-cassette recorders and electric irons were presented to the third prize award winners.

The West Akyem District Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Sintim-Aboagye, said the awards were meant to motivate teachers to perform creditably. As part of the celebration, the DCE and the Queen mother of Asamankese, Nana Akosua Birikoramaa, cut a huge golden jubilee cake jointly.

Some 63 basic and second cycle schools and about 30 voluntary organizations took part in an impressive march past. Awards were also given to winners of inter-schools quiz and debate contests, essay competition, beauty contest, march past and district assembly's best workers.

A large quantity of stationery donated by Miss Raya Hegerman, of the University of Minnesota, United States, was also presented to the District Education Office.

In the debate competition, Adeiso Presbyterian Secondary School won the first prize followed by Asamankese Secondary School and St Thomas Secondary Technical School. They all had cash prizes and computers.

The debate had as its topic, "Ghana at 50: are we better off today or at Independence?"

In the Junior Secondary School quiz contest, Asamankese Schools emerged winners, followed by Adeiso Town Council schools and Brekumanso Schools and were presented with cash prizes.

Miss Mavis Angenu of Asamankese Secondary School won the essay competition with Ernest Boamah Kumi of Adeiso Secondary School taking the second position followed by Miss Evelyn Tamakloe of St Thomas Secondary Technical School.

The topic for the essay was "Ghana yesterday, today and tomorrow".
