Assembly member suspended for gross misconduct

Manso-Nkwanta (Ash), May 30, GNA - Mrs. Esther Mensah, assembly

member for Manso-Kensere in the Amansie West District of Ashanti has been suspended by the assembly for improper conduct during meetings. The suspension was necessitated by her failure to attend two consecutive meetings, her continued disturbances during deliberations and her walk-out from the last sitting of the assembly last December. Mr. Newman Nexton Nkansah, the Presiding member, announced this

at the ordinary meeting of the assembly at Manso-Nkwanta. He said under the assembly's standing orders, "the presiding member shall suspend a member for misconduct in respect of refusal of a member to attend two consecutive meetings without tangible reasons", adding that her refusal to render an apology to the assembly resulted in the action. Mr Ben Kwakye-Adeefe, the District Chief Executive in his address, said the District generated 77,544 Ghana cedis out of the estimated target of 93,214 Ghana cedis for last year and described it as encouraging.

He said the assembly has reconstituted its revenue task force to help educate the people on the needs to pay their taxes. On education, the DCE said the assembly had assisted 400 needy but brilliant students in primary, junior and senior high schools as well as tertiary institutions with 8,500 Ghana cedis to cushion them from financial difficulties.

Mr Kwakye-Adeefe said the District improved its regional Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results from 17th position in 2000 to fourth position in 2007 which showed an improvement in teaching and learning in the area. He stressed the need for the assembly members to unite to ensure the total development of the area. 30 May 08
