Assembly does not award contracts to individuals

Tema, Jan. 8, GNA - Mr Samuel Evans Ashong Narh, Tema Municipal Chief Executive, on Wednesday said the assembly awards contracts to registered contractors who bid for contracts put on tender.

He said the assembly had a tender board and did not award contracts to individuals and found it difficult to fish out assembly members who bid for contracts.

Mr Narh, who was speaking to the Ghana News Agency on allegations that the assembly awarded contracts to assembly members against the directives of the President, said "the assembly should not award contract to any assembly member."

He said when the Assembly's tender board opened bids it did not look out for individuals but rather qualified contractors. "It is difficult to identify an assembly member who is a contractor and has put in a bid for a contract."

"I can find an assembly member involved in a contract if on several visits to the project site I find him there but this has not come to my notice in any way."

Mr Narh said there were some contracts that were awarded contracts through the procurement committee and these were mostly printing works that did not involve huge money.

He said the assembly had awarded a 92 million cedis' contract for the partitioning of part of the Manhean Library to be used as offices for the Zonal Council and that it was not given to an individual assembly member.
