Agona West NADMO prevents disaster

The timely intervention by the Agona West Municipal National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to stop people from using the dilapidated wooden foot bridge in the town averted disaster.

Mr Kwesi Dawood Poka, Municipal Director of NADMO, told journalists on Friday that less than 30 minutes after the closure of the wooden foot bridge on River Akora to the public, it collapsed.

The foot bridge served as a short cut from Swedru Post Office/Desuanem areas to Mandela Market and the Central Business District of Agona Swedru.

The Agona West Assembly constructed the temporary bridge in 2010 after Swedru flood disaster.

He said at about 0700 hours information got to him that River Akora was overflowing its banks due to continuous heavy rain.

According Mr Poka, he directed officers to close down the weak bridge to avert disaster.

The residents of Agona Swedru commended the NADMO officials for taking action to prevent disaster.
