Agona Swedru court nullifies DCE confirmation results

Gomoa Assin (C/R), June 1, GNA - Mr Justice B.O. Tetteh of the Agona Swedru High Court has ordered the Electoral Commission to conduct fresh elections as soon as practicable to either confirm or disaffirm Mr Theophilus Kofi Ampah, the President's nominee for the position of District Chief Executive for Gomoa East.

The order followed the court's decision to declare the result of the election held by the assembly on April 28, which failed to confirm the nominee, null and void.

Following some anomalies detected in the election, two members of the assembly, Mr James Sappor and Mr Mark Panyin Bentil, filed a suit at the High Court to challenge the conduct of the election. Commenting on the High Court order Ogyedom Obrenu Kwesi Attah VI, Chief of Gomoa Afranse, appealed to the members of the assembly to consider the harm the absence of DCE was causing to the new district and do what was expected of them.

Obrifo Ahunaku Ahor Ankobea II, Omanhene of Gomoa Akyempim, said out of the 17 districts in the Central Region it was only Gomoa East which had no substantive DCE and described it as embarrassing to the traditional rulers.

"Currently activities of the assembly have come to a standstill due to absence of a Chief Executive," he said. He appealed to the Regional Minister to impress upon the Electoral Commission to conduct the election soon for the district to get a DCE and move ahead. 01 June 09
