APRM District Oversight Committees inaugurated

Apowa (W/R), Nov. 10, GNA - Professor Samuel K. Agyepong, Chairman of the African Peer Review Mechanism Governing Council (NAPRM-GC), said the formation of the District Oversight Committees (DOC) are aimed at expanding the operationalisation of the concept.
He said without the involvement of many other stakeholders, the APRM would not be all-embracing and participatory. Prof Agyepong said these at the inauguration of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan, Axim Municipality, Shama, Mpohor Wassa East, Ahanta West, Ellembelle and Jomoro DOCs at a ceremony at Apowa near Takoradi on Monday.
He said the DOCs were not meant for arresting the citizens but mandated to oversee the National Programme of action for the APRM. He added that the DOC must mobilise citizens to own and manage and disseminate the APRM and lead in promoting good governance at the district level.
Prof Agyepong said a nine-member of the DOC must include women groups, gender activists, youth groups, persons with disability, faith-based organisations, community based organisations, public and private sector and traditional authorities who were required to promote national unity and progress towards the achievement of good governance. He, however, reminded members of the DOCs that they ceased to be members once they accepted an office in any political party. Mr Philip K. Nkrumah, Metropolitan Chief Executive for Sekondi-Takoradi appealed to members of the DOC to operate within their respective districts and should not fail the APRM Governing Council. Dr. Francis Appiah, Executive Secretary of the APRM said it was the duty of every Ghanaian to safeguard the nation and contributed towards its development.
"Without the participation of our people, our development will fail us as a nation," he stressed. He said the APRM operated within transparent, objective and there should be no discrimination in the work of the DOC. 10 Nov. 08
