22 persons die from road accidents in Wa

Twenty-two persons lost their lives in the Wa municipality through road crashes during the first quarter of the year.

The crashes involved 26 commercial vehicles, 21 private cars and 41 motor cycles. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Joseph Oppong, Upper West Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) made this known in Wa.

He made this known to Ghana News Agency on Thursday, after the MTTU made a joint operation with the National Road Safety Commission, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and Road Safety Management Services to ensure road safety.

DSP Oppong noted that 60 motor bikes, nine motor tricycles and 11 vehicles were seized during the operation while 23 persons are being prosecuted in court.

He said 16 offenders were found guilty and fined a total of GHS 3,060 for violating various road traffic regulations. DSP Oppong noted that the exercise is not going to be a one-stop exercise.

He urged motor bike riders to put on helmet to protect them from fatalities in case of a road crash.
