14 cutlass-wielding youth injured in violent Kpone demo

A peaceful demonstration in Kpone later turned violent Tuesday morning resulting in about 14 people being injured.

The demonstrators, who were wielding cutlasses, stones and other weapons, clash with the police when they began torching public properties and locking up offices.

The law enforcement agencies resorted to the firing of teargas and rubber bullets to disperse the irate crowd dressed in red and black attire.

The Tema Police command confirmed the injuries to Starr News, adding the injured persons are receiving treatment at the Kpone Health Centre.

The incensed youth vandalised properties to press home their displeasure about the “indiscriminate selling of land by the elders of the town” and the worsening energy crisis.

The locals are demanding preferential treatment since the community houses the Sunon-Asogli Power Plant but continue to be hit by what has popularly become known as ‘dumsor’ in Ghana.

They are calling for the head of the Traditional Council Registrar Harry Atipo. In a petition, the youth said they want infrastructural improvement, a modern police station and upgraded health centre among others in the area.
