The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists together with medical laboratory science professionals across the world are celebrating International Medical Laboratory Science Day to increase awareness of the role Medical Laboratory Scientists play in providing health care.

Medical laboratory scientists play a key role in diagnosis, quality development and assurance, treatment, research, and development in the modern medical sciences.

The global theme, “Guardians of Quality and Patient Safety: Biomedical Laboratory Scientists” as selected by the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) is to reflect the health issues around the world and support the UN and WHO’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Medical laboratory scientists are one of the largest groups of healthcare professionals and have a vital role in medicine and public health. We understand our role in healthcare and are the best to carry our message.

Recognized by the state, especially during the fight against COVID-19 pandemic, Medical laboratory scientists were honored by the Republic of Ghana for our contributions towards nation building. We pledge to commit ourselves to advancing the course of our clients through our services to ensure their safety.

The role of medical laboratory scientists cannot be well achieved without effective regulatory and professional development regimes. To this end, we are calling on the authorities to initiate steps to amend the relevant laws to improve the regulation of our profession for patient safety and quality diagnostic services as well as the establishment of a Ghana College of Medical Laboratory Science to promote specialization of professionals to contribute to patient care.

We call for expansion of opportunities for professionals in all spheres of the healthcare industry and beyond (including the manufacturing sector where there is a big opportunity for stakeholders to engage the profession to create employment as well as gain foreign exchange through exportation).

The recent exodus of health professionals including medical laboratory scientists require collaborative efforts to ensure that professional opportunities as well as employment conditions are improved to avoid brain-drain.

Again, we commend the government on the “Agenda 111 Project”, and call on the project managers to open up for our professional input for us to get the best out of the project to enhance patient care and ensure that the facilities for the medical laboratory meet international standards.

The medical laboratory professionals in Ghana are committed to quality care to clients and are open to collaborating with all stakeholders to advance the course of clients.

We wish all medical laboratory science professionals in Ghana and across the globe a happy Medical Laboratory Science Day.

Long Live GAMLS!
