Asokwa East NDC reacts to defection of Alhaji Tanko

Kumasi, Sept 6, GNA- The Asokwa East constituency executive of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has denied that Alhaji Musah Bawa Tanko, who announced his defection to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Wednesday, was the constituency chairman of the party.
A statement issued in Kumasi on Friday and signed by Alhaji Gado Sulemana and Mr J.B. Salifu, constituency chairman and secretary respectively, said Alhaji Tanko was the chairman from 1998 to 2001. It said it was unfortunate that Alhaji Tanko's claim that he was the chairman of the constituency has sent wrong signals about his defection to the numerous supporters of the party.
The constituency executive described Alhaji Tanko as "an impediment to the growth of the party in the constituency and the region as a whole since his utterances and conduct rather turned away people from joining the party instead of attracting them into it. The statement said his defection will neither deter nor obstruct the party from recapturing the parliamentary seat from the NPP in the 2004 elections.
The executive said in spite of the fact that Alhaji Tanko ceased to be the constituency chairman he still has some party properties in his custody.
The executive said if he failed to return the items, they will advise themselves.
