Bawku Municipal Assembly inaugurates 15 new Zonal Councils

The Bawku Municipal Assembly has inaugurated 15 zonal councils in Binduri, Pusiga, and the Bawku municipality to help promote good governance at the grass roots level.

The move was also to speed up the implementation of the decentralized concept which would help the participation of the ordinary man in decision-making in local governance.

Mr Abdulai Musah, Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku, who inaugurated the councils said that, the devolution of power to the people at the grass roots level would not only empower them but more importantly engage them to participate actively in projects that would enable them achieve the developmental agenda of the area.

He said it was unfortunate that for a long while power and decision making were preserved for central government without the direct involvement of the people at the grass roots who should be the beneficiaries of the local administration.

He said for governance to work effectively, there was the need for government to reverse power to the people at the grass roots level to enable them identify their needs for government.

Mr Musah said, this would afford the people the opportunity to take decisions to address their peculiar felt needs which were realistic and achievable for their development.

He affirmed the commitment of government and the Municipal Assembly to assist the councils in the performance of their duties and responsibilities.

He said the Assembly expects the various councils to embrace revenue mobilization as a priority in the performance of their duties as it was the only way that could help them develop.

The MCE reminded the councils not to relent on their efforts in the supervision of the staff of the assemblies who have been assigned duties in the area of authority.**
