Ghanaians urged to help change people’s perception of politics as a dirty game

A founding member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kofi MIntah, has appealed to Ghanaians to help change the perception that politics is a dirty game.

“Let us do away with insults, mudslinging, lies and personal attacks on opponents from the Ghanaian politics to make it neat and clean,” he said when addressing some NDC supporters at Winneba.

Mr Mintah, the First Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, said some important personalities in the country did not want to associate themselves with politics because they did not want their reputation to be soiled through mudslinging, lies and insults.

He expressed concern about how the society was being torn apart through politics and added that “Partisan politics would come and go but Ghanaians must continue to live as one people.”

Mr Mintah said what was more disturbing was how partisan politics was being used to destroy the Ghanaian culture which forbids the youth to insult elders.

He said the much respected Ghanaian discipline was being sacrificed on the altar of political expediency when anybody at all could insult even the President and leading members of political parties.

“What kind of legacy are we bequeathing to our future leaders if we don’t find anything wrong in insulting our President today? Mr Mintah asked.

He urged the leaders of all political parties to take a decision on how to control this disturbing issue before it gets out of hand.

Mr Mintah appealed to radio presenters to devise means to control political discussions and phone-in programmes.
