Women in Northern Region march for peaceful election

The West African Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP-Ghana) has called on women to champion the campaign for peace at all levels to ensure that the 2012 parliamentary and presidential elections were conducted peacefully.

It said women could do this in diverse ways including speaking to their husbands and children on the need to maintain the peace adding that women were naturally endowed with the ability to soften the stands and the psyche of people.

Miss Melody Azinim, Programme Officer of WANEP-Ghana, said this when addressing Women in Peace Building Movement in Tamale as part of the celebration of the International Women’s Day under theme; “Women march for peaceful 2012 elections in Ghana”.

The women movement celebrated the day with a peaceful procession through the various principal streets of the Tamale metropolis some of who carried placards such as “No politics of insults”, “media should give equal coverage to all parties”, “Lets entrench our democracy through a peaceful elections”, “We do not want to be refugees in Ghana”, and among others.

Miss Azinim encouraged the citizenry to select politicians who could improve the socio-economic wellbeing of Ghanaians and shun politicians who preach violence adding that politics is about development issues and not what will divide the nation.

She called on the media to avoid politicians who will want to use their medium to cause mayhem saying that the media must also serve the major watchdog role that it had been entrusted with.

Miss Azinim appealed to the general public to register when the bio-metric registration opens in March 24th and cautioned minors to desist from participating since it was a criminal offence.

Alhaji Abudulai Harruna Friday, the Metro Chief Executive of Tamale, said the metropolis has witnessed rapid transformation in infrastructural development because the people in the area had recognized the need to live in peaceful co-existence and call on the people to heighten the need for peace in the country.

He said the people must not take for granted the peace they were currently enjoying but guide jealously the tranquil atmosphere in the country saying that women’s contribution to development in general cannot be over-emphasized since they were found in all sphere of society.
