Only five women won their seats in the AEED district.

Ajumako (C/R), Oct 1, GNA - Only five out of the 21 women who contested the District Assembly election in the Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam district (AEED) were successful.

The Assemblywomen won the seats at Ajumako Ochiso, Enyan Abaasa, Kokoben Kromain and Ajumako Bisease.

A total of 137 candidates vied for 42 seats, Mr. Bawa Adamu, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam District Electoral Officer, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview at Ajumako on Friday.

He said out of 47,362 registered voters, only about 40 percent cast their votes and attributed the low turnout to apathy and the postponement of the election.

Mr Adamu said two candidates - Mr Bosco de-Graft and Mr Emmanuel Kofi Abban - tied in the Obentser Electoral Area with 191 votes each and that a run off would be held for them two.

In a related development, Mr. Kofi Assan, assemblyman for Mando electoral Area has been returned unopposed for a third time.
