Five women won assembly seats in Agona West and East

Agona Swedru, Feb 21, GNA - Five out of nine women who contested the recent District Level Election won their seats in the Agona West Municipal and Agona East District. Mr Adams Abubakar Al-Hassan, Project Coordinator of the Agona District Civic Union, said this at a one day workshop at Agona Swedru. He said four out of the seven women won in the Agona West while one out of two women won in the Agona East districts. The workshop, organized by Behaviour Change Support Project, USAID/Government of Ghana joint project, was aimed at sensitizing the people on the need to change their attitudes to social, political and cultural to enhance development.

It was attended by health professionals, heads of departments and social groups. Mr Al-Hassan said the number of women elected to the two Assemblies was inadequate and called on the electorate to vote for more women in future election. Mr Al-Hassan appealed to international donors, NGOs, District, Municipal and Metropolitan assemblies to support more women to contest future elections. Mrs Evelyn Lamptey, Central Regional Coordinator of (BCSP), said nine districts in the region had been adopted to push the idea of behaviour Change Support Project.

She said the ultimate aim of the Project was to focus on family planning, malaria control, life choice and good life to partner the local NGOs to ensure full implementation of the four-year programme. Dr Nii Adjei Ajetey, Agona West Municipal Director of Health Services, urged assembly Members, opinion leaders and other stakeholders in health to educate pregnant women to attend regular antenatal services to reduce maternal deaths.
