Eligibility To Contest Parliamentary Primaries

The National Headquarters has taken note of statements from some constituency officers regarding the eligibility or otherwise of persons who may wish to contest in the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the Party.

For the avoidance of doubt, Article 11, 2d of the Party’s constitution states that:

“A Member applying for nomination as the Party’s Parliamentary Candidate for any Constituency shall be a registered Member and a voter in the Constituency, which he or she seeks to represent, provided that, in appropriate cases, the National Executive Committee, in consultation with the Regional and Constituency Executives, may dispense with the requirement.”

In the spirit of the above, and for the purpose of maximising the Party’s parliamentary and presidential votes in the next elections, the National Executive Committee has just started a wide range of consultations with regional and constituency executives, as well as the Party in Parliament, in respect of constituencies where the above provision may have to be invoked.

Within this consultation, the Party will take into account the contributions interested nominees have made to the Party.

Officers and members of the Party at all levels are therefore advised to desist from making statements or conducting themselves in a manner that could prejudice the outcomes of these consultations.
