Nana Akomea, Deputy Chairperson of the Campaign Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticized the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) for getting figures on the number of people registered in the ongoing Limited Voters’ Registration Exercise wrong.

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo Morning show on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, Akomea said that it is worrying that the commission is having difficulties with basic addition.

He mentioned that the EC previously miscalculated figures for the 2020 presidential election and had to announce different election results, which raised a lot of issues.

“The Electoral Commission getting it wrong in adding 1 and 1 is not acceptable, and they have to look at it.

“During the 2020 election, they did the same thing, and they announced election results about two times. It is disgusting; it doesn’t help,” he said in Twi.

Nana Akomea, who is also the Managing Director of Intercity STC Coaches Limited, emphasized that it is inappropriate for members of any political party to be elected as commissioners of the EC.

He said that the two leading political parties in the country, the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have all done this when they were in power, and it has not been helpful.

He suggested that changing the law to prevent the president from appointing commissioners of the EC would improve the situation.

“The law that allows the sitting president to fill vacancies at the Electoral Commission is not helpful. Because the party of the sitting president is taking part in the election, so why should he be allowed to appoint the referee? But that is what the law says.

“Moving forward as a country in our democracy, this is one of the provisions we should look at,” he added.
