WHO supports Ghana's guinea worm eradication programme

Tamale, Dec. 15, GNA - The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday presented equipment valued at 599.67 million cedis to support the Ghana Guinea Worm Eradication Programme at a ceremony in Tamale. The items included 200 bicycles with spare parts, five Yamaha motorcycles, 500 91Polo' shirts for field supervisors and 170 Tee shirts for volunteers.

The WHO would also provide technical assistance and funds for the training of field staff.

Dr Joachim Saweka, WHO Representative in Ghana, who presented the items, said the items were in fulfilment and commitment of the organisation towards the eradication of the disease in Ghana. Dr Akwasi Twumasi, Deputy Northern Regional Director of Public Health, who received the items, thanked the WHO for its commitment towards eradication efforts and urged other development partners to emulate the Organisation.

He called on stakeholders in the health sector to make concerted efforts to help eradicate the disease to make "Ghana at 50", a guinea worm free country.

Dr Twumasi assured the WHO that the items would be put to good use to ensure that the objectives of the Ghana Guinea Worm Eradication Programme were achieved. 15 Dec. 06
