KATH receives eye drugs and equipment

Kumasi, May 5, GNA - The eye clinic of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) on Wednesday took delivery of large quantities of drugs,

lenses, gloves and eye surgical equipment, valued at about US$100,000.00. The donation was from the Moran Eye Centre, University of Utah, United States (US). A team of health experts from the Centre is in the country, as part of the annual humanitarian medical mission, to partner the hospital to perform free eye screening and surgery on people with eye diseases. About 200 patients are expected to benefit.

Dr Alan Cradal, Managing Director of the Centre, speaking at the ceremony, said they had for the past 14 years collaborated with KATH to provide free eye care services to patients in the country. Additionally, they had been assisting the clinic in the areas of infrastructure and equipment support to enhance its performance. Dr Crandal said the focus of the mission was to provide training to

local doctors and eye specialists, in order to build their capacity in modern eye care services.

Dr Peter Osei Bonsu, Head of the Eye Clinic, lauded the mission for the tremendous help it was giving to the hospital to realize its dream of achieving excellence in eye care delivery. The mission had performed surgeries on cataract, glaucoma and squinted eye to restore the sight of many people.

Dr Bonsu said through its training programme, the clinic was gradually moving to an area of sub-specialization to strengthen the capacity of doctors, nurses and other specialists. Professor Ohene Adjei, Chief Executive of KATH, who received the items, thanked the mission and said the equipment and the training programmes would significantly assist the doctors to provide efficient services.
