Guinea worm cases at Offinso district reduce

Offinso (Ash), Nov 20, GNA - The Offinso District, which had the highest number of guinea worm cases in the Ashanti region last year, has recorded only one case this year.

Mr Francis Osei, District Director of Health Services, said the reduction was the result of improved social amenities in the endemic communities and educational programmes on the need for the people to always drink safe water.

He was addressing Keep Fit Clubs at Offinso after they had embarked on a health walk dubbed "Healthy Lifestyle, Healthy Living" on Saturday.

He said the endemic communities, Biemu, Addae-Nkwanta, Apenten and Nyamebekyere, had all been provided with boreholes, saying, there were plans to provide good drinking water to deprived communities to ensure that the District was guinea worm free. He called on residents in the communities to always keep their environment clean to avoid contracting diseases. Mr Osei cautioned the youth to refrain from excessive drinking and other immoral acts that hampered their development since they were the nation's future leaders.
