Birim Central Municipality marks AIDS Day

Mr. Owusu Frempong Boadu, the Birim Central Municipal Coordinating Director, has urged married couples to remain faithful to each other.

He also advised the youth to abstain from pre-marital sex, to avoid contracting HIV and AIDS and other sexually-transmitted diseases.

Mr. Boadu gave the advice in a message on behalf of the Birim Central Municipal Chief Executive when the municipality observed this year’s World AIDS Day at Akim Oda in the Eastern Region.

It was on the world theme: “Fast Track Meeting the Health Needs of Children towards an HIV/AIDS-Free Generation,” organized by the Birim Central Municipal HIV/AIDS Committee, under the auspices of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Mr. Boadu advised Ghanaians to use condom in difficult times.

Mr. Jesus Alodina Abolunga, the Focal Person for the Municipal HIV/AIDS Committee, said the World AIDS Day was instituted by the WHO in 1981 with the purpose of sensitizing people worldwide on the hazards associated with the disease and its protection.

He said the programme was successful, due to the prior information given out to people in the communities at durbars and on radio stations.

Mr. Abolunga advised people who have been diagnosed positive of HIV, to register with the People Living With AIDS Association in the municipality for counseling and medication.

He assured victims of HIV of the confidentiality of their health status by the association, as far as professionalism of work was concerned.
