Assembly presents cholera items to health facilities

The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA) has presented items worth GH¢15,000 to some health facilities in Tema to help fight the cholera outbreak in the Metropolis.

The items include 19 cholera beds, 60 plastic buckets, 15 veronica buckets for hand washing and 10 packets of nose masks.

Other items were 20 gallons of bleach, 20 gallons of disinfectant, 60 plastic vomiting bowls, and 50 pairs of utility gloves.

The items are to be distributed to the Tema General Hospital, Tema Polyclinic and the Manhean Health Centre.

Mr Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive, said the Assembly was working hard to ensure that cholera outbreak in the Metropolis becomes a thing of the past.

Mr Odamtten thanked medical officials in the Metropolis for helping contain the cholera outbreak, adding that his outfit would continue to partner them to ensure a healthy society.

He said TMA was aware of the pressure health officials went through to cater for patients due to the over stretched health facilities in the Metropolis.

Dr Sally Quartey, Medical Doctor in-charge of the Tema Polyclinic who received the items on behalf of the facilities, said the number of cholera cases in area was gradually reducing.

Dr Quartey said Tema Polyclinic reordered the first case in July and within six weeks, the number of cases went up to 74 but reduced to 32 last week.

She said 283 cases with three deaths had been recorded at the facility.
