53% in Bolgatanga register under NHIS

Bolgatanga, Dec. 4, GNA - Management of Bolgatanga Municipal Mutual Health Insurance scheme has since its inception in 2005 collected 270,846 Ghana cedis as premium. It collected 117,171 Ghana cedis, this year as against 85,641 Ghana cedis in 2007.

Mr Dominic Akuribire, Manager of the Scheme, announced this at the National Health Insurance Awareness Week celebration in Bolgatanga on Wednesday. He said the scheme registered 126,445 clients by the end of October this year representing 53 per cent of the population in the municipality.

Mr Akuribire said the increase was due to accreditation to private health institutions by National Health Insurance Authority to augment efforts of government hospitals in running the scheme. He said 88,309 clients had been issued with identity cards in Bolgatanga Municipality, 2,544 pregnant women in the municipality had been registered and being given free maternal health care. Mr Akuribire noted that multiple attendances by some clients, inadequate office space, inadequate staff, and the lack of means of transport for field workers were some major challenges facing the scheme.

As part of the celebration, staff of the scheme in collaboration with staff of Zoom-Lion Company undertook a clean-up exercise at the Bolgatanga main lorry park. A route march through principal streets of Bolgatanga was organised to create awareness about the scheme. 04 Dec. 08
