Scrap dealer jailed for stealing

A Scrap Dealer, Alhassan Kamal, was on Monday handed 12 years jail term by an Accra Circuit Court for stealing a Benz truck worth GH?15,000.00 belonging to one John Afful.

Alhassan pleaded not guilty to the charge but was however found guilty by the court after going through full trial.

He was initially sentenced to five years imprisonment, but later assaulted the investigator in the case, hence the decision by the court to increase the jail term to 12 years to serve as a punishment for his harsh behaviour.

The prosecutor, Police Inspector Grace Badoh told the court that the complainant is a driver and lives at Mankesim, while the convict is a scrap dealer and lives at Shukura.

She said on September 2, the complainant was driving a Benz Cargo truck from Mankesim to Yamoransa when the vehicle got involved in an accident.

She said on September 12, after the testing officer had examined the truck, the complainant decided to tow the truck to Accra, for body rehabilitation.

The prosecution said, the towing truck towing the complainant’s truck developed a fault at Amanfrom near Weija and could no longer tow the complainant’s truck.

She told the court that later in the afternoon on the same day, the complainant returned to the place his truck was parked but did not find it.

Police Inspector Badoh said upon information, the police arrested the convict and a witness who was towing the complainant’s truck to Sikkens, but he told the police that the convict hired him to tow the truck for him.
