Man with AK 47 assault rifle nabbed in Ho

The Police on night patrol in Ho picked up one Benjamin Danso who had an AK 47 assault rifle and two other weapons on him.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Peterkin Yentumi Gyinae, the Volta Regional Commander, told journalists on Thursday that other gun types were one foreign made double-barrel pistol and one locally made pistol.

He said the guns were wrapped in cement paper and thrust into a haversack.

Mr Gyinae, giving circumstances of the arrest, said the night patrol team on Monday spotted three men at around 0200 hours at an area near the Ho Central Market.

He said after some monitoring, Police approached them but two escaped, leaving Danso with the bag.

Mr Gyinae said hints from initial interrogations indicated that Danso who said he was from Gbedekope in Aflao might be a hardened criminal just out of jail.

He said Danso had been handed over to the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Police Headquarters for further investigations.

Mr Gyinae appealed to the general public to help police trace the other two persons who were with Danso.

In another development the Police in Ho on Wednesday organized an early morning swoop and picked up 18 people all males hanging around areas associated with crime in the Ho Municipal area.

Mr Gyinae gave the names of the spots as Kpakpo House, near the Ho-Central terminus of the Metro Mass Transit, Timber Market and Dome rpt Dome and Power House areas.

He said wrapping of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana were found on eight of the 18.

Mr Gyinae said the swoops were prompted by recent reports of break-ins and hinted that more pre-emptive measures were being planned to tackle the miscreants.

He said the 18, aged between 20 and 40 years were being screened and would be arraigned soon.
