Pupil Teacher in court for defrauding 17 people of Ghc55,300

A pupil teacher has appeared before the Kade District Magistrate Court charged for defrauding 17 persons to the tune of Ghc52,800.00.

Mark Daniel Baah pleaded guilty to the charge of fraud by promising to secure jobs for the 17 people in the Ghana Armed Forces.

He was granted bail in the sum of Ghc30,000 with two sureties one of whom must have a residential address within the jurisdiction of the court.

He is to appear in court again on June 6.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector James Essel told the court presided over by Mr. Abdul Majid Iliasu that, Baah first defrauded 10 people to the tune of Ghc28,900.00, and seven others of various sums totaling Ghc23,900.00.

The prosecutor explained that, in November 2013, the accused, who was training some students of Asoum Senior High School as a cadet instructor, impressed on two of the trainees that he could seek recruitment for them in the Ghana Armed Forces.

The trainees then informed the complainant, who is their father and collected an amount of Ghc2,500.00 from the complainant to Baah.

Baah later asked the complainant to help find other people interested in the enlistment.

The complainant then contacted eight other people and various sums totaling Ghc28,900.00 were collected from them and given to the accused, but the accused failed to secure them the job and went into hiding at Somanya.

A report was lodged at the police station and with the assistance of the complainant, Baah was arrested and handed over to the Akwatia police.

During investigations, the accused admitted the offence and stated that, the money was given to someone whose name he only knew as Captain and cannot trace his whereabouts.

The Police also got to know that Baah had used similar fraudulent means to collect Ghc23, 900.00 from eight other people but failed to deliver on his promise.
