Driver’s mate jailed 12 months for drinking insecticide

A 30-year-old driver’s mate who attempted suicide by drinking insecticide at Akuffo Number Three village in the Eastern Region, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour by a circuit court at Akim Swedru.

Osei Kwabena pleaded guilty to attempted suicide.

Detective Chief Inspector Kingsley Antwi, who briefed the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Akim Oda on Monday, said on July 14th this year around 1615 hours, one Mr. John Mensah from a village near Akenkensu was visiting his farm when he saw Kwabena in pain.

He said Mr. Mensah quickly rushed Kwabena to the village and he (Kwabena) told them that he had become addicted to alcohol so he wanted to end his life with the insecticide.

According to Chief Inspector Antwi, a cross-section of the people later took Kwabena to the Akenkensu Police Station in the area, where he blamed his action on alcoholism.

He said the Police took him to a nearby health centre for a first aid treatment before referring him to the Akim Oda Government Hospital.
