Armed robbers injures police commander

Kumasi, July 24, GNA - The Ashanti Regional Commander of the Police Buffalo Unit, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Nyamekye Adane- Ameyaw, sustained gunshot wounds on his left leg in a shoot-out with suspected armed robbers.

A suspected robber was also killed in the incident at Atwima-Agogo near Kumasi on Friday.

DSP Adane-Ameyaw was leading a team of Police personnel to arrest one Kwaku Asante, a murder suspect when the shoot-out occurred.

Chief Inspector Mohammed Yusif Tanko, Regional Head of the Police Public Relations Unit, told the Ghana News Agency in Kumasi that Asante has been accused for killing one Yaw Akoto in October last year, in a chieftaincy dispute and had since been hiding.

The police had a tip-off that the suspect had resurfaced and was hiding at Atwima-Agogo with his gang.

Chief Inspector Tanko said armed with this information, the personnel stormed the area and when the suspect and his gang sighted them, they opened fire, compelling the police to respond.

He said in the process the deceased believed to be in his 20's was shot dead whilst DSP Adane-Ameyaw was wounded and sensing danger, other members of the group fled.

Chief Inspector Tanko said the police have mounted an intensive search for the suspects.

The injured commander was treated and discharged at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
