Two remanded over quick burial of pregnant woman

Juaso (Ash), Nov 9, GNA - Sixty-year-old Afisatu Gonja together with her senior brother, Kofi Derchi, 76, have been ordered by the Juaso Circuit Court to be held in prison custody over the burial of their dead relative.

The accused persons, mother and uncle respectively of the deceased, Hannah Fosuaa, pleaded guilty to the charge of hindering an inquest.

Fosuaa, who was pregnant, was buried at Bompata in the Asante-Akim South District the very day she died.

Afisatu and Derchi would re-appear on Wednesday, November 10. Police Sergeant Emmanuel Ofori told the court that the complainants, Mary Ohenwaa, Medical Assistant and Lily Denyo, Midwife, are both at the Bompata Health Centre.

He said the deceased had been attending antenatal clinic at the Health Centre but in August was referred to the Juaso District Hospital.

The prosecution said on October 15 Fosuaa died and the accused persons caused her to be buried that same day. When this came to the notice of officials of the hospital they made a formal report to the police and the two were arrested.
